Short Hairstyles - Fuss Free and Easy to Manage Styles

Although many women dream of having a long hairstyle that can be worn in a ponytail, in a bun, or wavy and sexy, the reality is that most of us don't have the time to maintain such a style. Instead, we seek an easy to care for style that's also nice looking.

Enter the short style. While there are many styles that only a few women can pull off, most short styles are flattering to just about any face shape and hair texture. Let's look at a few.

short hairstyles
The bob

One of the most consistently popular short hairstyles is the bob. This can be defined in several ways, but it generally involves bangs (either short or longer, right up against the eyebrows) and an all-around straight cut. This style is easy to maintain and works for curly hair or very straight hair.

The bob has many variations, however. These days, some women choose to not have bangs and instead have a longer bang that is nearly long enough to be held behind the ears, but not quite long enough. These bangs, then, will form a nice sweep across the forehead. The rest of the hair might be cut straight across, or it might be longer in the front and shorter in the back (which is the most popular).

Styling the basic bob usually requires nothing more than a brush and a hairdryer (though women with curly hair can usually skip the hairdryer part of the equation). But often women like to jazz up a bob by backcombing the hair at the back of the crown so there is some body to the hair there.

The backcombing also gives the hair a more current and fashionable look.

The celebrity

We call this style the celebrity because many celebrities have sported the look, and it's not a look that many "regular women" can carry off.

We are talking about the very short cut that has longer bangs that are either behind the ear or that sweep gently over the forehead. This cut is usually right above or right at the ears.

Those who can best carry of this cut are women with long, thin necks and delicate features. Natalie Portman often sports this short look and her petite frame and delicate facial features are perfect for it.

Although it might be hard for many of us to carry off, the upside is that it's extremely easy to care for (literally wash and go) and easy to maintain. Some women report that they feel they always have to wear makeup when they have very short hair, either because the cut makes them look very young without makeup, or because they feel much unfinished when they're not wearing makeup with the very short cut.

The shag

Popular since the 1960s, this hairstyle can be a short or a medium cut. At a medium length, however, it can be harder to style. In a short version, it's easy to style and easy to maintain.

The shag usually starts with bangs (not short and straight across, however, but rather longer bangs that sweep the forehead) and many choppy layers all around. The hair can be styled with no styling solution so it's left layered and messy, or the woman can style it with a gel or other styling aid and make the layers stick out and look a little funky throughout the style.
